For Rosca Horsemanship, a key factor in his horsemanship philosophy is the consideration of the horses correct functional physiology, promoting enhanced movement of the horse, muscle function, and ways to maintain this; an integral part of any training programme.

As a qualified Equine Sports and Rehabilitation Massage Therapist (cert. ESMT) with a complimentary Level 4 qualification in Equine Lameness and Rehabilitation, Ross has spent many years developing his knowledge of the muscular-skeletal system and equine biomechanics (and continues to do so!), progressing specific aspects of his bodywork methodology to include light-touch therapy, trigger point therapy and myofascial release alongside working with the nervous system to promote a 'baseline neutral' to build on.

This has proven invaluable to both working with the physiology of the horse and rider partnership, aiding in progressive resolution of negative behaviours and improving movement patterns by successfully relieving tension and discomfort.

With specialist experience in equine behaviour, Ross uniquely combines his knowledge of the equine muscular system, natural intuition and observations of behavioural feedback during these soft tissue treatments to offer a truly tailored session for each horse, allowing much needed adaptation between individuals to promote deeper physical and emotional release, relaxation and progressive responses.

Treatments with Ross commonly include both static and dynamic assessment of movement, identification of muscle tone and any specific areas of soreness present, before commencing with a full bodywork treatment, or that of a specific area, adapting as needed.

Equine Sports Massage Therapy has a multitude of benefits for horses of all shapes and sizes, from Shetland to Shire; their body's need maintenance all the same. Aside from the relief of tension and discomfort a horse may be feeling due to muscular tightness, bodywork results in the draining of the lymphatic system, aids in muscle recovery, beneficial for both post and pre competition riding, and is important for many horses to maintain flexibility, a healthy range of movement and restore movement patterns, regardless of age!

Ross also holds an ITECT Level 3 in Sports Massage Therapy and REPS accredited Level 3 Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructing qualifications, allowing valuable knowledge in to the biomechanics of the rider and how the human body can help or hinder a riders form, thus impacting that of the horse.

Ross knows only too well how sports therapy and bodywork benefits horse and rider, therefore feeling it should be an essential aspect of care, regular maintenance and good horsemanship practices.
